Former Punjab CM Beant Singh’s Assassin Arrested

Beant SinghThailand police have arrested Gurmeet Singh, one of the assassins of former Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh, on Monday.

On August 31, 1995, the former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh was killed in a car bomb blast near Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. 15 other including his staff and guards were killed in the accident. He was the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 to 1995.

There terror outfit Babbar Khalsa had claimed the responsibility. Gurmeet Singh, alias Jagtar Singh Tara, was a member of the terror group Babbar Khalsa. He and five other militants of the group were convicted in the assassination case. Gurmeet was arrested in 1996 by the Punjab Police and in 2004 he fled Chandigarh prison.

Following information from Punjab police, Thailand police have been hunting for him since October 2014 and arrested him on Monday in the eastern province of Chonburi. Police said that Gurmeet faces extradition to India.
