China won’t let India join NSG unless it sign NPT

Modi-ChinaPrime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tashkent and sought China’s support for India’s entry into the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group.

On his meeting to Tashkent, PM Modi told Xi Jinping that, China must make a fair and objective assessment on merits on India’s NSG bid.

41 Countries backed India’s ‪‎NSG Membership but 7 Countries including China, Brazil, Switzerland, Turkey, Ireland, New Zealand and Austria opposed it, saying signing NPTremains the main criteria.

During PM Modi’s recent visit, Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann had supported India’s NSG bid, but Switzerland opposed India’s bid for becoming an NSG member at the Plenary in Seoul. Mexico kept its word though.

It is to be noted that, while 190 countries have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and South Sudan are not part of it.
